Last Starting XI (v San Marino): Cech; Ujfalusi, Rozehnal, Kovac, Jankulovski; Jarolim (70th Polak), Galasek (82nd Plasil), Rosicky; Fenin, Koller, Kulic (58th Vlcek).

Kevin Doyle and Richard Dunne have both been passed fit after sustaining minor injuries in Bratislava.
Stephen Ireland is absent on compassionate leave, and Steve Staunton has confirmed that Liverpool defender Steve Finnan is out, having already missed the draw with Slovakia because of a knee injury problem. He stayed at Anfield to receive further treatment, but has failed to recover sufficiently in time for the Czech clash.
Darren Potter of Wolves will also miss out through injury, but Staunton told www.fai.ie: "It is unfortunate that Steve and Darren have withdrawn due to injury but we still have 20 players in the squad which will still give us plenty of options for Wednesday's game in Prague."

Match ReportAntonio Di Natale was the two-goal hero for Italy as the Azzurri claimed three vital points from their Group B qualifier in Ukraine.
Ukraine aggrieved
Roberto Donadoni's side were on the back foot for much of the encounter but Di Natale's double moved Italy above France and into second place in the table. Andriy Shevchenko was arguably the game's outstanding player, leading the home team forward and scoring an equaliser midway through the second half, but that was not enough to earn the point Ukraine felt they merited.
Headed opener
Shevchenko set the tone early on, firing a 25-metre free-kick against the crossbar with Gianluigi Buffon beaten. The striker continued to pose a threat, forcing Buffon into action from even further out as Ukraine went close to an opening goal, yet in typical fashion Italy took the lead with their first chance four minutes before the break. Andrea Pirlo lifted the ball to Di Natale who nodded in from close range.
Shevchenko menace
The forward had the next chance for Italy too, after Vincenzo Iaquinta led a three-on-one attack, but his header was too weak and Olexandr Shovkovskiy made an easy save. Shevchenko had not wasted all his energy in the first period and he continued to inspire the hosts' bid for an equaliser. He charged down Andrea Barzagli's clearance but could not guide the ball past Buffon with just the goalkeeper to beat.
Counterattack winner
It was only a matter of time before he did eventually break through and after 71 minutes he swivelled to sweep a loose ball past Buffon as the Italy defence failed to clear a corner. But with a rare counterattack, Di Natale struck the decisive blow with 13 minutes remaining. Massimo Ambrosini chipped the ball over the Ukraine rearguard to send Di Natale free and he maintained his composure to place the ball calmly into the net and secure the points.

Past Meetings
It will be the fourth time in just over a year that Italy have crossed paths with Ukraine. The two teams met in the quarter-final of last summer’s World Cup, where goals by Luca Toni (2) and Gianluca Zambrotta led Italy to a resounding 3-0 victory. The Bayern Munich striker was back on target, along with Massimo Oddo, in the 2-0 qualifier last October at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico.
The two countries also played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw on June 2, 2006 in a warm-up game before the World Cup. All in all Ukraine have faced the Azzurri five times and scored only once, in a 3-1 Euro 96’ qualifier. The game on Wednesday night will only be Italy’s second trip to Ukrainian soil, having won 2-0 in Kiev in another European Championship qualifier in 1995.

TEAM NEWS
Ukraine
Oleg Blokhin blasted his players for what he called a “shameless performance” against Georgia on Saturday and must now decide whether to stick with the same team. Chelsea striker is short of match-fitness after being frozen out of Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea squad but is certain to lead the line for the Yellow-and-Blues alongside Liverpool’s Andriy Voronin.
Maxym Kalynchenko, a substitute on Saturday, is unlikely to be promoted to the starting line-up after he was at fault for Georgia’s late equaliser.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Andriy Pyatov (FC Vorskla Poltava), Olexandr Shovkovskiy (FC Dynamo Kyiv), Maxym Startsev (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk).
Defenders: Olexandr Grytsay (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Andriy Nesmachniy (FC Dynamo Kyiv), Olexandr Kucher (FC Shakhtar Donetsk), Andriy Rusol (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Volodymyr Yezerskiy (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Dmytro Chygrynskiy (FC Shakhtar Donetsk), Vyacheslav Sviderskiy (FC Shakhtar Donetsk).
Midfielders: Oleh Gusev (FC Dynamo Kyiv), Ruslan Rotan (FC Dynamo Kyiv), Taras Mikhalik (FC Dynamo Kyiv), Konstantin Kravchenko (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Olexiy Gay (FC Shakhtar Donetsk), Maxym Kalynychenko (FC Spartak Moskva), Anatoliy Tymoschuk (FC Zenit St. Petersburg), Serhiy Nazarenko (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Oleh Shelayev (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk).
Forwards: Andriy Shevchenko (Chelsea FC), Andriy Vorobey (FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk), Andriy Voronin (Liverpool FC), Olexandr Gladkiy (FC Shakhtar Donetsk).
Italy
Coach Roberto Donadoni has a number of selection worries. Star striker Luca Toni is unavailable once again due to a thigh injury and has been replaced in the squad by Juventus hitman Vincenzo Iaquinta.
In midfield Gennaro Gattuso is suspended and is likely to be replaced by Milan colleague Massimo Ambrosini, while there are worries over the fitness of Italy’s man of the match on Saturday, Andrea Pirlo, as well as Roma star Daniele De Rossi. There are also question marks over the condition of Barcelona wing-back Gianluca Zambrotta, who has muscle fatigue.
In attack Donadoni has to decide whether to stick with Alessandro Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi, who were disappointing against France. Reports suggest that both may be dropped with either Iaquinta or Cristiano Lucarelli given the lone striker role, to be supported by either Antonio Di Natale or Fabio Quagliarella.
Squad
Goalkeepers: Gianluca Curci (AS Roma), Marco Amelia (AS Livorno Calcio), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
Defenders: Andrea Barzagli (US Città di Palermo), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid CF), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Alessandro Gamberini (ACF Fiorentina), Fabio Grosso (Olympique Lyonnais), Massimo Oddo (AC Milan), Christian Panucci (AS Roma), Gianluca Zambrotta (FC Barcelona)
Midfielders: Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Alberto Aquilani (AS Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Pasquale Foggia (Cagliari Calcio), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Simone Perrotta (AS Roma), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)
Forwards: Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese Calcio), Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan), Cristiano Lucarelli (FC Shakhtar Donetsk), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese Calcio), Vincenzo Iaquinta (Juventus)

Match ReportJames McFadden's stunning strike midway through the second half gave Scotland a win in France that takes them top of UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group B.
Scotland hold out
The home side had the lion's share of the play but could not beat the stubborn visiting defence. And just as they had against France in Glasgow a year ago, Scotland scored a timely goal for a 1-0 victory – these results being the only qualifying defeats for Les Bleus, home or away, since 1999. Scotland are now top and a point above Italy, with France having fallen two places to third with three games left.
Stout defending
Having drawn in Italy on Saturday to stay in pole position, France were clearly keen for three points to lift them to within sight of the finals. But despite dominating possession and territory, they created little in the way of clear-cut chances in the first half, perhaps missing the suspended Thierry Henry. Florent Malouda did force Craig Gordon into a save while Claude Makelele volleyed over, but that was as close as France came before the break.
Gordon saves
A neat one-two with David Trezeguet on 55 minutes set up Franck Ribéry but the FC Bayern München forward's angled shot was well stopped by Gordon, as was his effort on the rebound. Soon after, Lassana Diarra and Ribéry combined to supply Nicolas Anelka near the penalty spot yet Gordon pushed the ball over the bar.
Dramatic strike
Then came the sucker punch. McFadden let fly from distance with such ferocity that Mickaël Landreau could only tip the ball into his own top right-hand corner. It was all France thereafter, but Scotland's rearguard remained unbreachable. On 13 October Scotland welcome Ukraine hoping to close in on their first final tournament since 1998 while France go to the Faroe Islands.

France
With Gregory Coupet and Djibril Cisse already out of the squad, things aren't all rosy in the French camp. Thierry Henry's suspension has only compounded these woes, although there are still a wealth of forward options available.
The only player under question at the moment is William Gallas, the Arsenal skipper struggling to recover in time for this match.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Sébastien Frey (ACF Fiorentina), Mickaël Landreau (Paris Saint-Germain FC), Ulrich Ramé (FC Girondins de Bordeaux).
Defenders: Eric Abidal (FC Barcelona), François Clerc (Olympique Lyonnais), Julien Escudé (Sevilla FC), Patrice Evra (Manchester United FC), William Gallas (Arsenal FC), Philippe Mexes (AS Roma), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal FC), Lilian Thuram (FC Barcelona).
Midfielders: Alou Diarra (FC Girondins de Bordeaux), Lassana Diarra (Chelsea FC), Claude Makelele (Chelsea FC), Samir Nasri (Olympique de Marseille), Jérémy Toulalan (Olympique Lyonnais), Patrick Vieira (FC Internazionale Milano).
Forwards: Nicolas Anelka (Bolton Wanderers FC), Karim Benzema (Olympique Lyonnais), Sidney Govou (Olympique Lyonnais), Florent Malouda (Chelsea FC), Franck Ribéry (FC Bayern München), David Trezeguet (Juventus).
Scotland
Barry Ferguson is back from suspension after missing Saturday's win over Lithuania, while Kenny Miller and Gary Naysmith are out of the squad through injury.
The visitors are set to operate more defensively than they did at the weekend, with a lone striker being a distinct possibility. The honours could fall to Kris Boyd, who opened the scoring against the Baltic side.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Craig Gordon (Sunderland AFC), David Marshall (Norwich City FC), Allan McGregor (Rangers FC).
Defenders: Graham Alexander (Preston North End FC), Russell Anderson (Sunderland AFC), Gary Caldwell (Celtic FC), Alan Hutton (Rangers FC), Jay McEveley (Derby County FC), Stephen McManus (Celtic FC), Gary Naysmith (Sheffield United FC), David Weir (Rangers FC).
Midfielders: Scott Brown (Celtic FC), Barry Ferguson (Rangers FC), Darren Fletcher (Manchester United FC), Paul Hartley (Celtic FC), Lee McCulloch (Rangers FC), Stephen Pearson (Derby County FC), Barry Robson (Dundee United FC), Gary Teale (Derby County FC).
Forwards: Craig Beattie (West Bromwich Albion FC), Kris Boyd (Rangers FC), James McFadden (Everton FC), Shaun Maloney (Aston Villa FC), Kenny Miller (Celtic FC), Garry O’Connor (Birmingham City FC).
Nicolas Anelka admits France will have to meet Scotland's physical challenge at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday night.Les Bleus lead Euro 2008 Qualifying Group B by a point from Scotland with world champions Italy a further point adrift.
A France win in Paris would go a long way to securing them a place in Austria and Switzerland next summer and Anelka, who will lead the attack in the absence of the suspended Thierry Henry, is gunning for Alex McLeish's men.
He said: "Even without Henry in the side, we can be very dangerous. We need that against Scotland because a win could be crucial for us.
"The key is going to be matching them up physically. They won't come and have a go at us but they still have to be respected.
"We also have to score early as one thing we know about Scotland is they can defend well.
"If we haven't scored by the half-hour mark it will frustrate us and then it becomes dangerous."
France failed to score at all on Saturday but will have been pleased to have come away from their World Cup final re-match against Italy in Milan with a 0-0 draw.

Match Report
A last-gasp equaliser from Branislav Ivanović denied Portugal second place in Group A and kept alive Serbia's hopes of reaching UEFA EURO 2008™.
Sublime free-kick
Portugal could have closed to within two points of leaders Poland with a victory and they appeared on course when Simão fired them in front after eleven minutes but Ivanović stunned the home crowd with an 88th-minute leveller to leave Serbia just a point behind their opponents. The home side made the perfect start as Simão's precise free-kick, awarded after Nenad Kovačević had fouled Cristiano Ronaldo, found the target.
Portugal pressure
The Portuguese had Petit to thank for preserving their lead after he produced a fantastic block minutes later to deny Zdravko Kuzmanović's goalbound effort. Then Nuno Gomes headed Bosingwa's inviting cross against a Serbia post and Maniche blasted the rebound straight at goalkeeper Vladimir Stojković. Ronaldo went close with two further efforts as Portugal searched for a telling second goal.
Late leveller
Serbia became more composed as the second half progressed and Kovačević wasted a glorious chance to restore parity by firing a half-volley over the crossbar following Ricardo's poor punch. The real drama came late on, however, as with two minutes to play, Dejan Stanković's free-kick caused panic in the Portugal penalty area and Ivanović was able to turn the ball in from close range.
Tight group
There was still time for Ivica Dragutinović to receive a red card in added time but Serbia had done enough to earn the draw. Group A could not be much tighter ahead of October and November's qualifiers, with Poland and Finland on 21 and 19 points respectively, Portugal two points further back in third, and Serbia a point behind them in fourth – with the latter two countries each having a game in hand.

PORTUGAL
The Selecção das Quinas have lost Marco Caneira and Hélder Postiga to injury, but have cover for both positions. Caneira has been habitually overshadowed by fellow Ché Miguel in the past and the right-back should be right back into the starting side. In attack, SL Benfica strike Nuno Gomes has been given more nods by Scolari than Porto’s Postiga so the losses are relative.
There could be another dropout to dry dock as midfield pit-bull Petit has been suffering from niggling thigh pains, but the number 8 is expected to make it back to match fitness for the Serbia game. Just in case he can’t the Brazilian tactician has been putting others through their paces for an essential anchor place in holding midfield.
Recent 21 year-old birthday boy João Moutinho has been tested by Scolari in recent sessions, along with outside bets Bosingwa and Bruno Alves, although Tiago has more chances in theory. The Juventus man has more top-notch competition experience than the others and should feel more at home partnering Maniche.
There’s also a rumble for a place in the sun further up front as Quaresma is in the running to rob Simão of his current first team status. The FC Porto winger has shown that he’s on form in recent training sessions while the Atlético de Madrid man didn’t fully convince at da Luz on Saturday.
Quaresma also showed his credentials against Poland by ripping through the tightly-woven Polish defence and set the second Portuguese goal up just three minutes after coming on as a sub for Nuno Gomes. His cross was headed on by, ironically considering that both appear mutually exclusive, Simão and then netted by Ronaldo.
Many believe that the ciganito (little gypsy), a.k.a. Harry Potter, has the goods to weave more magic against Serbia than the ex-SL Benfica Captain. His dribbling put the Polish on red alert and in recent tests Quaresma has even got the better of young gun Nani in terms of explosive sprints with the ball under control.
In fact Quaresma was last a first eleven member of the Quinas at the same Alvalade venue, also where he honed his art as an alumnus of the Sporting youth academy, starring in the 4-0 rout of Belgium. The winger set Cristiano Ronaldo up for the 2-0 and he himself scored the 3-0 in a fantastic move.
Some would like to see an offensive trio made up of Simão-Ronaldo-Quaresma, but that seems only likely to be a last-ditch or second half possibility. Cristiano Ronaldo (see Soundbites below) doesn’t like the number 9 slot and Nuno Gomes still has Scolari trusting in his killer instinct in front of goal – even if it is a little tame of late.
Scolari is said to be thinking of trying more of a 4-2-3-1 than a 4-3-3 for Alvalade in sectors of the Portuguese sporting press. This would see Nuno Gomes alone up front and with Ronaldo more centred, either as a number 10 playmaker or in-the-hole. Both Simão and Quaresma could therefore flank the number 17 in this system.
That would leave Deco on the bench to start with unless Scolari opts to pull the Brazilian-Portuguese number 20 back into holding midfield. Deco didn’t exactly have the game of his life at da Luz but Felipão seems loath to do without the Barça man even though the temptation of a Simão-Ronaldo-Quaresma-Nuno Gomes quartet is there.
SERBIA
The Бели Орлови (White Eagles) need to spread their wings at Alvalade, although a large swathe of increasingly hostile home opinion feels that the Coach is clipping the wings. Clemente is receiving increasingly less friendly fire from a once-warm Serbian press that dubbed the Spaniard as ‘Little Napoleon’.
Sportski Zurnal said Serbia now needed “nothing short of a miracle” and that “Serbia are dangerously close to being eliminated”, emphasising the fact that the 15,000-strong home crowd booed their national side off the field. Serbia's tennis success drew the only joy out of the home fans as Djokovic had his name chanted: “There is only one Novak Djokovic!” they sang after he reached the U.S. Open final in New York. Ouch.
The defeat to Belgium and the goalless draw against Finland were only ameliorated by the Portuguese setback against Poland at da Luz. Not all the blame can be shouldered by the Spanish tactician, however, despite his over-cautious 4-5-1 line-up as the players themselves fizzled on Saturday.
Dejan Stanković, Miloš Krasić, Danko Lazović and Nikola Žigić all missed the mark when a little more accuracy would have resulted in rippling nets and a valuable three points. It may well be that the latter – who impressed so much at racing Santander last year and is still Serbian top scorer with 4 goals – gets a first team place this time.
In Belgrade Žigić only came on for PSV Eindhoven marksman Lazović in the 62nd minute, but perhaps necessity will encourage Clemente to be bolder and go for a two-man strike force. Standard Liege man Jovanović is also in the running, although he hasn’t scored for Serbia since the early June win over Finland.
Centre-backs Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United) and Mladen Krstajic (Shalke 04) are both back after serving suspension against Finland, but the latter is now reportedly out with injury problems. Although the defence wasn’t the problem against Finland there’s bound to be much more to repel with Portugal’s attacking midfield hungry for goals and with twice the Finnish goal tally.

Match ReportMichael Owen scored two first-half goals as England's UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying recovery continued with a 3-0 victory against Russia at Wembley that sent them second in Group E.
Owen masterclass
A scorer in Saturday's 3-0 triumph over Israel, Owen did not have to wait long to give further cause to proclaim his return to form when he drilled in the opener on seven minutes. He could have doubled the lead soon after but his 40th international goal was not long in coming. Just after the half-hour he applied an emphatic half-volley to Emile Heskey's excellent knock-down and although Russia came back strong they could not break England's stubborn resistance, Rio Ferdinand rounding off the win late on.
Barry cross
Steve McClaren's team's preparations for this fixture were affected by the withdrawals of the injured Owen Hargreaves and Frank Lampard but if England missed the pair they did not show it. The man that came into the side, Gareth Barry, ensured a perfect start when his cross eluded everyone and fell at the feet of Owen, who controlled before side-footing in off the post. It was only the second goal Russia have conceded in Group E and they almost let in a third when Joe Cole's deflected through ball fell to Heskey.
Russia revival
The Wigan Athletic FC striker's effort was smothered by Vyacheslav Malafeev, but squirmed out to Owen who slipped with the goal at his mercy. It was not all England, however, as Konstantin Zyrianov had an effort ruled out for handball, but when Owen made it 2-0 on 31 minutes he left Russia with it all to do. Coach Guus Hiddink rang the changes, switching to a 3-4-3 formation as Diniyar Bilyaletdinov and Dmitri Sychev found new life and the pair sparked a brief revival after the restart. Yet England stood firm, and sealed a fourth successive 3-0 qualifying victory six minutes from time when Ferdinand fired in low at the near post.

TEAM NEWS
England are still without midfielders Owen Hargeaves and Frank Lampard, so McClaren’s job is done for him to a certain extent and Gareth Barry, who impressed against Israel, will start again alongside Steven Gerrard. In fact there are few changes that need to be made across the board as the defensive line seems settled, while Emile Heskey helped bring the best out of Michael Owen despite his own failings as a player. However, McClaren has suggested changes are still a possibility and it could be that Peter Crouch is recalled after he missed the match with Israel through suspension. Wayne Rooney and David Beckham are unavailable due to injury.

England face a crucial Euro 2008 qualifying clash against Russia at Wembley on Wednesday night and the omens are good for Steve McClaren's side.
The hosts are currently ranked 12 in the world and in Russia's last 11 away games against teams in the top 30 in the FIFA rankings, they have failed to win any.
Indeed the highest ranked team the Russians have beaten away (as opposed to at a neutral venue) in their last 30 road games was 55th ranked Macedonia.

Match Report
Slovenia had to resist a brave second-half display from ten-man Belarus to secure a 1-0 Group G win in Celje.
Lavrič penalty
An early penalty from Klemen Lavrič earned the points while Belarus had Artyom Radkov sent off for two bookable offences inside two second-half minutes. Pavel Plaskonny fouled Lavrič inside the box to give the home side their penalty three minutes into the match; the striker took the responsibility, planting a firm shot past Vladimir Gaev for his fourth goal of the qualifying campaign.
Under pressure
Valter Birsa was next to try his luck for the hosts, his speculative effort from 20 metres drifting past the left upright. Dalibor Stevanovič also set his sights from distance but his shot was well claimed by Gaev. Belarus were struggling to deal with the Slovenia wide men, Birsa and Andraž Kirm; it was Kirm who gave them a scare as he cut in from the left and let fly a strike from the corner of the area that grazed the bar.
Closer contest
Belarus began to threaten themselves through Timofei Kalachev, whose runs down the right and centre were troubling the home defence. First he had an attempt on goal which soared over the woodwork before his cross caused Slovenia to concede a throw-in in their danger zone. That found Sergei Kornilenko whose low shot was smothered by Slovenia No1 Samir Handanovič at his near post.
Captain sent off
Although Radkov was dismissed on 70 minutes for two fouls in quick succession, his team continued to push forward and nearly equalised when Dare Vršič brought down Kalachev on the edge of the box; Vladimir Korythko's free-kick being adeptly saved by Handanovič. Slovenia's Milivoje Novakovič then struck the bar against the run of play as his side held on for a victory which takes them three points clear of their opponents, into fourth place in the pool.

Match ReportTwo goals by Sotirios Kyrgiakos helped Greece's prospects of defending their European title in Austria and Switzerland, with a hard-earned away draw against in-form Norway.
Kyrgiakos double
Otto Rehhagel's side seem to be rekindling in qualifying the form that made them surprise winners at UEFA EURO 2004™ – the kind of form that eluded them when they missed out on last summer's FIFA World Cup. Twice the Group C leaders went ahead in the Norwegian capital through Kyrgiakos but Norway equalised on each occasion, through John Carew and a magnificent strike from John Arne Riise. The draw kept Greece top of a pool in which Turkey, Norway and Bosnia-Herzegovina remain in contention for the two qualification spots.
Carew equaliser
The visitors started well, requiring only seven minutes to take the initiative. A corner by Georgios Karagounis was flicked on and Kyrgiakos was there to head in the opener. Norway immediately hit back and Konstantinos Chalkias did well to tip a Morten Gamst Pedersen shot behind for a corner. But on the quarter-hour mark Carew restored parity, rising to nod in a Riise cross.
Riise strike
On the half-hour Kyrgiakos made it 2-1 for Greece when he netted from close range after goalkeeper Håkon Opdal had kept out his initial header from a Karagounis delivery. Norway again pulled level though: Riise scoring superbly after collecting a Jan Gunnar Solli pass. At the other end, Nikolaos Liberopoulos hit the bar early in the second half while Karagounis also went close.
End to end
Åge Hareide's men had several further chances, most notably when Pedersen shot wide, and they could have won late on when Riise forced another save from Chalkias before Martin Andresen's goalbound effort was deflected to safety. Greece themselves almost stole the points at the death as Liberopoulous again struck the woodwork but an exciting match ended all square.

Last Tuesday, two more players were added to the injury list as defender Michalis Kapsis of APOEL and midfielder Nikos Spyropoulos of Panionios had to withdraw from the squad. Kapsis was examined by the medical team of the national side and it was decided that the calf strain he suffered from was more serious than expected and he could not be considered for such a vital game, while Spyropoulos picked up a bicep strain in Panionios’ goalless draw with Aris in the opening match-day of Super League.

Match ReportGroup A leaders Poland moved a step closer to qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008™ with a goalless draw against a Finland side who could yet join them in the finals.
Boruc resistance
A sell-out crowd at Helsinki's Olympiastadion roared on the second-placed hosts, who are seeking to qualify for a major tournament for the first time – but they could find no way past Poland goalkeeper Artur Boruc. Finland custodian Jussi Jääskeläinen was also kept busy in a pulsating game in which both teams hit the woodwork.
Early chances
The home side had looked nervous early on, allowing Poland to create two opportunities, both of which were squandered by Mariusz Lewandowski. Finland finally offered a threat shortly after the half-hour when Alexei Eremenko Jr forced a smart stop from Boruc. The Celtic FC player had to be alert again three minutes later to deny Daniel Sjölund while Poland responded with efforts from Jacek Krzynówek and Euzebiusz Smolarek.
Smolarek opportunities
Leo Beenhakker's men had an excellent chance to open the scoring within four minutes of the restart but, following good work from Jakub Błaszczykowski, Smolarek could not get enough power on his shot to beat Jääskeläinen. Smolarek came close again when his chipped attempt was kept out by the impressive keeper. Having spent a long period on the back foot, Finland went within centimetres of taking the lead on 68 minutes when Eremenko's close-range shot struck a post.
Frantic finish
The hosts menaced again as Eremenko crossed for Jonatan Johansson but the striker's header flashed over the bar from 12 metres. Then Poland's Marek Saganowski rattled the woodwork before both sides nearly won the match in a frantic finish – Błaszczykowski going close for Poland and Sjölund seeing a late effort blocked. The result maintained Poland's two-point buffer over Finland in Group A.

Match ReportWales made amends for their 5-1 home defeat by Slovakia early in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying with a comfortable victory in Trnava tonight.
Comeback
Although Marek Mintál gave Slovakia a 12th-minute lead, Freddy Eastwood soon equalised and Wales captain Craig Bellamy struck twice to put his team 3-1 up at the break. Mintál pulled one back but a late Ján Ďurica own goal and Simon Davies' strike settled matters. Wales join fourth-placed Slovakia on ten points in Group D, today's visitors being behind on head-to-head record but having a game in hand.
Quick response
If it was a quiet opening, Slovakia scored with virtually the first chance when Mintál pounced after a defensive slip. Mintál then forced a superb save from Wayne Hennessey, who also denied Marek Čech, yet only ten minutes after the goal the game changed. Bellamy began the move as he set Joe Ledley away down the left, and his cross was ideal for Eastwood to turn in.
Bellamy goals
On 34 minutes Bellamy was sent clear by Ledley and he coolly chipped Štefan Senecký to put Wales ahead. Bellamy, who had missed Saturday's home defeat by group leaders Germany to be with his newborn baby, found the target again just before the break. Ledley reprised his role as creator with a clever ball that his captain finished from a tight angle.
Win sealed
Arrears were reduced in the 57th minute when Čech cut back the ball for Mintál, who took his opportunity well. However, the away fans, in good voice, had more to sing about when Bellamy's ball across the face of goal was deflected in by the luckless Ďurica. Davies' strong shot made it 5-2 late on. On 13 October Slovakia welcome San Marino while Wales are in Cyprus.

Wales arrived in Slovakia still smarting from their mauling by Germany but with skipper Craig Bellamy back in the squad and in high spirits.
Bellamy trained with the squad ahead of the afternoon flight from Cardiff on Monday having been absent for four days at the bedside of his sick one-week-old daughter.
But the West Ham man was raring to go as the squad arrived in Bratislava, saying only: "I'm fine, I want to play."
Bellamy's new daughter was discharged from hospital on Monday night and the 27-year-old felt able to leave her in the care of her mother Claire and several family members.
He has been needed at home for much of last week, and that ruled him out of the disappointing 2-0 home defeat by Germany which virtually ends Wales' chances of qualifying for Euro 2008 ahead of Wednesday's clash with Slovakia, 40 miles outside Bratislava in Trnava.
Now Wales need him too after what was a confidence-shattering defeat at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday for boss John Toshack's young side.
Jason Koumas failed to make the trip following an ankle knock, Mark Jones was sent back to Wrexham with a stomach upset, while Jermaine Easter, David Edwards and Neal Eardley were added to the party, with Real Sociedad midfielder David Vaughan flying from Barcelona to Vienna, where a hire car transported him to Bratislava.
Wales need a good result here, but the feeling is that their squad of youngsters received far too much criticism for being beaten by the third-best team in the world.
Certainly defender Danny Gabbidon agreed with that theory. The West Ham man will be at the heart of Wales' defence on Wednesday night in this Group D match, winning his 36th cap.
All around him will be youngsters learning how to play at this level, and still smarting from being outclassed by Germany in Cardiff.
Toshack admitted to damage limitation in the second half to avoid a humiliation.
Gabbidon said: "If we can cut out the errors, hopefully we can get a better result here in Slovakia.
"Maybe expectations were a bit high at the weekend, considering who we were playing and when you look at the make-up of our team. They had world-class players throughout and we had a lot of youngsters, most of whom are not Premier League players.
"It's going to take some time to get the best from them and they can learn as much from defeats like that as from the wins we've had. But we have to set our ambitions high and try to reach them.
"We had done pretty well in recent games. Now we must try to put in a good performance every time we play.
"We want to get some more points but it's just as important for the younger players to gain the experience of international football.
"So we won't give up, we will give 100% in every game and see how many points we can get from the remaining games. But we have to look forward now as well to the next qualifying campaign and believe these games will stand us in good stead for that next competition."

Match Report
A last-minute own goal from Keith Gillespie saw Northern Ireland slump to an agonising defeat against Iceland in rainswept Reykjavik.
Late misfortune
Nigel Worthington's side had come undone against Latvia at the weekend when Chris Baird put through his own net and this time it was Gillespie's turn, directing the ball past his own goalkeeper with just seconds remaining. The hosts had taken an early lead when Ármann Björnsson fired into the roof of the net after just six minutes but, after dominating for long spells, the visitors equalised through David Healy's 72nd-minute penalty only for Gillespie's miscue to seriously dent his side's prospects of qualification.
Early opener
Northern Ireland almost made the breakthrough inside the first minute with Warren Feeney testing Árni Arason with a fierce shot, but it was Iceland who took the lead when Björnsson drilled in Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson's centre after a swift move. Northern Ireland raised the tempo and Gary Clinghan fired wide before Jonny Evans somehow skied his close-range shot over the bar after Arason had pushed away a free-kick from Chris Brunt.
Brunt chance
Brunt was unlucky not to equalise in the 51st minute when his ferocious 25-metre shot cannoned back off the bar with Arason beaten. Michael Duff then got on the end of a Brunt corner but was unable to put enough power on his strike. The visitors finally drew level when Healy scored his 12th goal of the campaign from the spot after being upended by Ragnar Sigurdsson. Yet in added time Gillespie turned into his own net under pressure from Eidur Gudjohnsen to leave Northern Ireland three points off the Group F summit having played a game more than Sweden and Spain.

Match ReportThree goals in either half helped Croatia consolidate their UEFA EURO 2008™ Group E lead in this impressive six-goal showing against Andorra.
Petrić double
Mladen Petrić had scored four goals in the Croatian record-equalling 7-0 home win against David Rodrigo's side last October and the BV Borussia Dortmund player was again on target with two first-half strikes for the visitors. Darijo Srna, Niko Kranjčar, Eduardo da Silva and Ivan Rakitic were the other marksmen on a miserable day for Andorra, compounded by the 77th-minute dismissal of Genís García.
Deadlock broken
There had been little goalmouth action until midway through the first half when Kranjčar shot wide from just outside the area. A minute later, Eduardo headed over the bar from close range as the visitors began to assert their authority. Croatia then went ahead on 34 minutes, when Srna's free-kick deflected off the wall and over the helpless goalkeeper Koldo Álvarez.
Goal flurry
Within four minutes, Slaven Bilić's side had doubled their lead from another set-piece: Petrić curling an exquisite left-footed free-kick past Koldo. The forward then made it 3-0 a minute before the interval with an angled 12-metre drive that crept just inside the far post. After the break, three became four as the unmarked Kranjčar crashed a left-footed strike into the corner from nine metres. And as Andorra's resistance crumbled it was 5-0, Eduardo pouncing from short range after Kranjčar's shot had been blocked on the line on 55 minutes.
Red card
Croatia's dominance was total and a sixth goal duly arrived on 64 minutes, when substitute Rakitic poked in the rebound after Koldo had parried Petrić's curling free-kick. Rakitic, Kranjčar and substitute Boško Balaban all came close late on, but despite the sending-off of García for a late tackle on Rakitic, there would be no repeat of last October's scoreline.

Croatia boss Slaven Bilic believes his side are inching ever closer to the Euro 2008 finals as they prepare to visit Andorra on Wednesday.Croatia lead the way in Group E - two points clear of Russia, who play England on the same evening - and Bilic expects to pick up another three points.
"We are hoping that Russia and England draw, but really we need only look at our own games," Bilic said.
"We are 90% secure. If we beat Andorra and Israel, I think we are definitely in. Likewise, one blunder and we can drop the ball completely."
The other game in the pool on Wednesday night sees Macedonia host Estonia in a game which has little bearing on the top two spots.

Match ReportA goal in either half from Xavi Hernández and Fernando Torres got Spain's qualifying campaign back on track as they returned to the top two places in Group F, level on points with Sweden.
Key victory
Spain had suffered a setback to their UEFA EURO 2008™ prospects when they drew 1-1 in Iceland last Saturday, but Northern Ireland's defeat in Reykjavik played into their hands and Luis Aragonés's side took advantage with this victory in Oviedo. Xavi broke the deadlock on 13 minutes to settle the hosts' nerves and Torres's effort four minutes from time ensured Spain moved to 19 points alongside leaders Sweden, who have a game in hand, three points ahead of Northern Ireland.
Xavi celebration
Determined to improve on Saturday's showing, Spain began on the offensive and their efforts were rewarded when Xavi celebrated his 50th cap with the opening goal. Joaquín Sánchez delivered a superb cross from the flank and the FC Barcelona midfielder nudged the ball beyond goalkeeper Andris Vanins. Just after the half-hour it was almost 2-0, David Villa directing a free header wide after rising unmarked at a corner. He was almost punished at the other end four minutes later when former Getafe CF striker Maris Verpakovskis got on the end of a quick counterattack, missing Latvia's best chance of the match.
Iniesta influence
Four minutes into the second half Joaquín was left cursing his luck after his shot was deflected on to the woodwork by defender Kaspars Gorkss. Substitute Andrés Iniesta then elicited a fine stop from Vanins eleven minutes after the restart. The hosts struggled to break down an obdurate Latvia defence yet the points were finally sealed when Iniesta began a move that saw Miguel Ángel Angulo bring a save out of Vanins and Fernando Torres follow up to score.

Marco van Basten has pointed towards wholesale changes for the Albania tie after fielding a pretty much full-strength squad against Bulgaria.
"In the past we have played double-headers like this and left the team intact," he explained. These days players are expected to give a lot physically. They play two matches a week for their clubs and it goes on and on.
"If you have a chance to substitute these players with good replacements, you mustn't shy away from that," he revealed.
There are a couple of changes that he will be forced to make, Wesley Sneijder, star performer on Saturday has sustained a slight ankle injury and should be replaced by Clarence Seedorf. Meawhile John Heitinga is left out due to personal reasons.
The good news is that Rafael van der Vaart is back after missing the Bulgaria clash and should be handed a starting berth.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: van der Sar (Manchester United), Stekelenburg (Ajax), Timmer (Feyenoord).

Spain spared by Iniesta strikeAndrés Iniesta was again the scourge of Iceland as ten-man Spain salvaged a late draw in Reykjavik to take the visitors into joint second place in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group F.
Late leveller
The FC Barcelona midfielder had scored an 80th-minute winner in the sides' meeting in March and he repeated the trick at the Laugardalsvöllur Stadium – this after Xabi Alonso had been sent off midway through the first half and Emil Hallfredsson headed Iceland into a 40th-minute lead. Just when it seemed the hosts were in sight of a famous win, Iniesta struck four minutes from time to rescue a point that lifts Spain to 16 points, level with second-placed Northern Ireland and three behind Sweden.
Puerta remembered
Before kick-off there was a minute's silence in memory of Spain midfielder Antonio Puerta who died last week. Luis Aragonés's team, coming into this match on the back of a six-game winning run, were quickly on the attack, David Villa forcing a fine save from Iceland keeper Árni Arason with a low free-kick. The complexion of the tie changed in the 20th minute, however, when Alonso was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Arnar Vidarsson – Iceland would have made their numerical advantage count immediately had Joey Gudjonsson not prodded wide with only Iker Casillas to beat.
Hallfredsson header
Sergio Ramos and Fernando Torres went close for the visitors, yet it was Iceland who seized the initiative five minutes before half-time when Gudjonsson curled in a deep right-wing cross and Hallfredsson placed a diving header into the bottom corner. Forced to push forward, Spain dominated possession thereafter but created few clear-cut chances; by contrast, Casillas did well to deny Gunnar Heidar Thorvaldsson. But with Iceland four minutes away from victory, substitute Iniesta collected Luis García's lay-off to advance into the penalty area and slide a shot beyond Arason. Both sides will have home advantage on Wednesday, when Iceland entertain Northern Ireland and Spain tackle Latvia.

Solna shutout suits SwedenSweden stayed on course to reach UEFA EURO 2008™ thanks to a goalless draw with neighbours Denmark that took Lars Lagerbäck's team three points clear in Group F.
Chances at both ends
After the reverse fixture in Copenhagen in June had been awarded to Sweden, as a 3-0 victory, following a pitch invasion by a Denmark fan, both sides had chances to win tonight's game at the Råsunda Stadium in Solna. Johan Elmander and Zlatan Ibrahimović went close for Sweden while Daniel Agger, Martin Laursen and Jon Dahl Tomasson threatened for the visitors. Sweden now have 19 points from eight outings, eight more than the Danes who next play Liechtenstein on Wednesday. Sweden return to action on 17 October with an away match against the same opposition.
Sweden on top
Sweden started the brighter, Elmander heading over an Anders Svensson cross and also sending a shot over the crossbar, while at the other end Olof Mellberg blocked Tomasson's weak attempt. Denmark midfielder Thomas Kahlenberg then got in the way of Petter Hansson's goalbound free-kick after Elmander had been fouled, before Laursen stopped Christian Wilhelmsson's strike and goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen tipped Elmander's header from an Ibrahimović cross over.
Goalkeepers excel
Svensson was next to draw a save from the Denmark goalkeeper with an angled drive, which finally stung Morten Olsen's men into action: Agger subsequently meeting a corner to force a save from Sweden's Andreas Isaksson, who then had to keep out a Daniel Jensen effort from distance. The away team continued to press as Tomasson put a shot and a header over before Isaksson dealt comfortably with a Leon Andreasen attempt. Kennedy Bakircioglü and Svensson next tried their luck from long range as Sweden chased a winner. However, after Ibrahimović had squandered two late opportunities, both sides had to settle for a point.

England enjoy emphatic victory
England continued their Group E revival as Michael Owen and Micah Richards scored in the second period to add to a first-half Shaun Wright-Phillips strike which secured a comfortable home win against Israel.
Third straight win
A run of three games without a victory looked to have left England with an uphill task to qualify, but 3-0 victories against Andorra and Estonia got their campaign back on track and once Wright-Phillips had volleyed in the opener, Steve McClaren's team were always in charge against visitors who had lost only one of their previous 18 competitive fixtures. Owen eased any lingering doubts with a fine second goal four minutes into the second half, his 38th international strike, before Richards headed in his first for his country to round off a dominant display.
England on top
England had been beaten by Germany last month but McClaren's side were quickly into their stride at Wembley Stadium and could have been in front as early as the tenth minute, Emile Heskey – on his first appearance since UEFA EURO 2004™ – blazing Owen's lay-off over the bar. The hosts continued to press, however, and got their reward in the 20th minute when Wright-Phillips stole in at the far post to volley Joe Cole's left-wing cross into the net.
Mixed fortunes
England might have added to their advantage before half-time as they kept Israel penned inside their own half, Owen driving a shot straight at goalkeeper Dudu Awat and slashing the rebound high and wide. The Newcastle United FC striker made amends in style soon after the interval, turning on the edge of the Israel penalty area and drilling in an unstoppable half-volley. Richard rose highest to nod in a third from Gareth Barry's corner six minutes past the hour to ensure England will go into Wednesday's match against Russia, who are a point above them, in good heart. Israel have to wait until 17 October for their next game, against Croatia.

Russia survive scare to take points
Late strikes from Andrei Arshavin and Aleksandr Kerzhakov eased ten-man Russia to a convincing victory over F.Y.R. Macedonia in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying.
Late flurry
The Russians took an early lead through Vasili Berezutski and dominated proceedings before having goalkeeper Vladimir Gabulov sent off for a foul in the area which led to Igor Mitreski missing a penalty. Two goals in the last ten minutes, however, secured a home win that keeps Russia in contention around the top of Group E.
Early breakthrough
The hosts went ahead after eight minutes when Goce Sedloski brought down Arshavin and the striker fired over a free-kick from the left for Berezutsky to slot home from 12 metres. The visitors were struggling to get a foothold in the game, being limited to a speculative effort from Goran Popov. Russia, by contrast, had a series of long-range attempts, with Vladimir Bystrov and Konstantin Zyrianov going close.
Off the woodwork
Eventually, the Macedonians settled. Popov tried to beat Gabulov from distance before Vlade Lazarevski forced a save from the keeper with a fine strike. Nonetheless, the chief threat still came from Guus Hiddink's team and Dmitri Sychev made Petar Milosevski work before hitting the frame of the keeper's goal.
Paying the penalty
Yet the complexion of the match could have changed dramatically after 70 minutes. Gabulov brought down F.Y.R. Macedonia substitute Goran Maznov, earning a red card. However, substitute keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev dived to his right to keep out Mitreski's spot-kick. The miss was made worse for Srečko Katanec's side when Arshavin scored from just inside the area on 84 minutes. The same player turned supplier for Kerzhakov soon after with a cross from the right.

Captain Klose takes Germany closerTwo Miroslav Klose goals gave Germany a comfortable win in Wales that takes the Group D leaders to the verge of the UEFA EURO 2008™ finals.
One win away
Klose, captaining Germany for the first time in the injured Michael Ballack's absence, opened the scoring early on in Cardiff and his header on the hour to double the advantage was the very least the visitors deserved. They maintain the best record in any group having dropped just two points and are five ahead of the second-placed Czech Republic. Indeed, Germany go to the Republic of Ireland on 13 October knowing a victory would seal qualification
Klose strikes
Within five minutes Germany were ahead. Kevin Kuranyi raced forward from midfield and played the ball into the path of Klose, who produced a neat finish. Kuranyi broke through again in search of a second goal but was dispossessed by Lewin Nyatanga, before Thomas Hitzlsperger sent a free-kick centimetres over the bar. Kuranyi was then denied by James Collins as Germany's dominance continued unabated, with Wales grateful to go in at half-time only 1-0 down.
Second goal
There was little change to the pattern of the game after the interval. Roberto Hilbert forced a save from Wayne Hennessey, Bastian Schweinsteiger shot on to the top of the bar, before Klose struck again on the hour mark with a close-range header after Hilbert had tackled Gareth Bale and crossed into the box. Klose now wanted a hat-trick to mark his 70th cap but he fired straight at Hennessey before heading just past the post from a Marcell Jansen centre. Robert Earnshaw sent a rare Wales salvo narrowly over the bar but a comeback was never on. Wales, in fifth, visit Slovakia on Wednesday.

Hard work pays off for CzechsThe Czech Republic picked up the expected win in San Marino which consolidated second place in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group D but they were made to work by their hosts.
Victory earned
Tomáš Rosický scrambled in the opening goal but Marek Jankulovski and Jan Koller only settled matters in the second half after Alessandro Della Valle had been sent off for San Marino. The Czech Republic remain five points behind Germany but Slovakia's late equaliser against the Republic of Ireland leaves Karel Brückner's side with a three-point cushion over the team they welcome to Prague on Wednesday.
Czechs ahead
San Marino almost took a shock lead on two minutes when Petr Čech was forced to save by Carlo Valentini, and Andy Selva made the Chelsea FC goalkeeper work soon after. The visitors counterattacked and won a corner which Rosický sent on to the head of Koller but San Marino keeper Aldo Simoncini cleared the danger. Fabio Bollini then became the next player to test Čech, before Sammarinese dreams of a first UEFA European Championship point began to fade. Simoncini denied Marek Kulič and Martin Fenin, yet was finally beaten on 33 minutes when he got a fist to a Kulič effort only to see Rosický head in.
Points secured
The Czech Republic pushed for a second goal after the break and Koller nodded over before David Jarolím shot straight at Simoncini. Their task was made easier when Della Valle was shown a yellow card for a foul, then immediately booked again for dissent on 64 minutes. San Marino eventually succumbed once more when Jankulovski fired in a free-kick with 15 minutes remaining. Koller headed in a late third from substitute Stanislav Vlček's cross and a victory against Ireland in midweek would leave the Czech Republic within sight of the finals.

Qualifying round - 08 September 2007 , Hungary - Bosnia & Herzegovina
Gera penalty wins it for Hungary
Bosnia-Herzegovina's hopes of qualifying for UEFA EURO 2008™ took a severe blow in Szekesfehervar as Zoltán Gera's first-half penalty helped Hungary to another victory against their Group C rivals.
Under threat
The West Bromwich Albion FC forward was among the scorers almost a year ago to the day when Hungary triumphed 3-1 in Zenica, and Gera found the net again in the 39th minute today – drilling his spot-kick high into the top-left corner after Róbert Feczesin had been felled by Ivan Radeljić. The win moved fifth-placed Hungary on to nine points from eight games, while Bosnia-Herzegovina dropped from second to fourth after both Turkey and Norway picked up points in later games.
Impressive Fülöp
Gera was not the only hero for Hungary: goalkeeper Márton Fülöp giving an early indication of his fine form when turning behind a Zlatan Muslimović effort. Radeljić was shown a yellow card for his part in the penalty award, although Gera's fierce strike was a more effective punishment. Fülöp was then to the fore again, tipping a close-range Muslimović header over the bar and following that up by collecting confidently from the resulting corner.
Muslimović foiled
Hungary went into the interval a goal to the good after Fülöp foiled Muslimović once more, although the hosts were the first to threaten in the second half as visiting keeper Adnan Gušo kept out Feczesin's strike from the edge of the box. Neither No1 was forced into anything other than a routine stop after that, however, as Hungary comfortably held on to record their third victory of the campaign.

Milan stalemate favours France
France maintain the edge in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group B after coming away from Italy with a goalless draw.
France top
Les Bleus had gained revenge for their 2006 FIFA World Cup final defeat with a 3-1 home win against the Azzurri last September, but in a tight game in Milan neither side emerged triumphant tonight. France are now one point clear of their visitors on Wednesday, Scotland, who have moved ahead of Italy by the same margin following their victory against Lithuania. Ukraine, where Italy play in midweek, are four further points behind.
No quarter given
These two evenly matched teams gave no quarter anywhere on the pitch, especially in midfield where Patrick Vieira and Gennaro Gattuso played with full commitment. It was not until the half-hour that there was a real chance at either end, as Alessandro Del Piero was denied by a Vieira sliding tackle and then shot at Mickaël Landreau after a one-two with Mauro Camoranesi.
Buffon saves
Del Piero soon turned provider for Filippo Inzaghi whose attempt from the byline brushed the top of the crossbar, while the flair of Franck Ribéry gave France an opening late in the first half as he jinked past Gianluca Zambrotta but was unable to produce a finish. Florent Malouda then tested Gianluigi Buffon with a powerful drive from 20 metres, yet the Italy goalkeeper made an equally fine stop.
Reflex stop
The second period began brightly with Camoranesi driving at Landreau from distance and Nicolas Anelka prompting an excellent reflex save from Buffon. Neither keeper looked like being beaten, though, and even when Buffon did fail to reach a long ball forward which Anelka headed goalwards, Fabio Cannavaro was in behind him providing cover.

TEAM NEWS
Italy
The only doubt for Roberto Donadoni is Luca Toni, but even if he does not make it, the Azzurri can rely on the ever prolific Filippo Inzaghi to score the all important goals.
The Italian national team coach seems destined to play Barzagli at the centre of the defence along with Cannavaro, considering that Materazzi is not available due to injury. However it is yet unclear who will partner Toni or Inzaghi upfront, even though during the latest training sessions Cristian Lucarelli seemed the most in-form striker.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Christian Abbiati (Club Atlético de Madrid), Marco Amelia (AS Livorno Calcio), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
Defenders: Andrea Barzagli (US Città di Palermo), Fabio Cannavaro (Real Madrid CF), Giorgio Chiellini (Juventus), Alessandro Gamberini (ACF Fiorentina), Fabio Grosso (Olympique Lyonnais), Massimo Oddo (AC Milan), Christian Panucci (AS Roma), Gianluca Zambrotta (FC Barcelona)
Midfielders: Massimo Ambrosini (AC Milan), Alberto Aquilani (AS Roma), Mauro Camoranesi (Juventus), Daniele De Rossi (AS Roma), Pasquale Foggia (Cagliari Calcio), Gennaro Gattuso (AC Milan), Simone Perrotta (AS Roma), Andrea Pirlo (AC Milan)
Forwards: Alessandro Del Piero (Juventus), Antonio Di Natale (Udinese Calcio), Filippo Inzaghi (AC Milan), Cristiano Lucarelli (FC Shakhtar Donetsk), Fabio Quagliarella (Udinese Calcio), Luca Toni (FC Bayern München)
France
Patrick Vieira is set to play for Les Bleus despite the worry of Inter due to his injury which he has not recovered completely from. The former Juventus player is set to play alongside Makelele, Ribery and Malouda in a four-man midfield.
On the other hand, Domenech seems to have trouble in defence as William Gallas injured himself during Friday's training session. In attack France will rely on the Anelka-Henry duo to beat Gianluigi Buffon.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Sébastien Frey (ACF Fiorentina), Mickaël Landreau (Paris Saint-Germain FC), Ulrich Ramé (FC Girondins de Bordeaux).
Defenders: Eric Abidal (FC Barcelona), François Clerc (Olympique Lyonnais), Julien Escudé (Sevilla FC), Patrice Evra (Manchester United FC), William Gallas (Arsenal FC), Philippe Mexes (AS Roma), Bacary Sagna (Arsenal FC), Lilian Thuram (FC Barcelona).
Midfielders: Alou Diarra (FC Girondins de Bordeaux), Lassana Diarra (Chelsea FC), Claude Makelele (Chelsea FC), Samir Nasri (Olympique de Marseille), Jérémy Toulalan (Olympique Lyonnais), Patrick Vieira (FC Internazionale Milano).
Forwards: Nicolas Anelka (Bolton Wanderers FC), Karim Benzema (Olympique Lyonnais), Sidney Govou (Olympique Lyonnais), Thierry Henry (FC Barcelona), Florent Malouda (Chelsea FC), Franck Ribéry (FC Bayern München), David Trezeguet (Juventus).

Last-gasp leveller frustrates Ukraine
A last-gasp Georgia equaliser tonight could prove a huge blow to Ukraine's UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying hopes.
Five points adrift
The visitors to Tbilisi led early through Oleh Shelayev and were only denied more goals by Georgia keeper Georgi Lomaia before substitute David Siradze headed the home side level a minute from the end. With Scotland beating Lithuania 3-1, fourth-placed Ukraine are now five points adrift of second in Group B though they have a game in hand.
Early goal
Ukraine started brightly and had the first shot of the match in the fourth minute through Volodymyr Yezerskiy, Lomaia proving equal to the effort. Oleh Blokhin's team did not have to wait long to break the deadlock, though, as Shelayev connected with Ruslan Rotan's outswinging corner to the far post and shot in. Rotan nearly added a second immediately afterwards but curled the ball wide.
Shevchenko denied
Andriy Shevchenko, captaining Ukraine despite recent injury problems, forced a save from Lomaia while visiting keeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy was tested by Mate Ghvinianidze before Georgi Demetradze drove over from a free-kick. Andriy Rusol was the next to be denied by Lomaia although Georgia came close to an equaliser just before the break when Lasha Jakobia sliced over.
Equaliser
Shevchenko was determined to put the result beyond doubt in the second half, yet Lomaia was equal to a strong ten-metre shot and then a curling effort from outside the area which he dived to tip wide. Serhiy Nazarenko also threatened but Ukraine's lead disappeared when Demetradze's inswinging corner was headed high into the net by Siradze. Ukraine qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup despite conceding a late equaliser in Georgia but they welcome Italy on Wednesday knowing victory could be crucial for their hopes this time. Georgia's next group game is away to the world champions on 13 October.

Stream #1Serbia stifled by stubborn Finland
A disciplined and determined defensive effort earned Finland a valuable point in Serbia which ensured both sides stayed in contention to progress from UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group A.
Missed opportunities
It might have been even better for Roy Hodgson's team had Jonatan Johansson accepted a presentable opportunity just past the quarter-hour, although Serbia largely controlled the play with Dejan Stanković, Miloš Krasić, Danko Lazović twice, and Nikola Žigić all spurning chances to claim a morale-boosting three points ahead of the trip to Portugal on Wednesday. Finland, meanwhile, welcome Poland to Helsinki the same evening having taken 18 points from their first ten matches.
Serbia pressure
The visitors settled quickly in Belgrade and, after a spell of possession, carved out the first real opening of the game, Johansson finding space on the edge of the Serbia penalty area in the 17th minute only to lift his shot over the crossbar. That proved Finland's only opportunity of the contest as the home side gradually pressed them back. Stankovic curled a free-kick beyond Jussi Jääskeläinen but over the woodwork while Krasić's effort was blocked by Hannu Tihinen and Lazović shot wide from Boško Janković's corner.
Finland hold firm
The second half followed the pattern of the first with Serbia seeking a breakthrough; Lazović squandered another chance as he shot straight at Jääskeläinen from close range. Home coach Javier Clemente used all his substitutes as he attempted to find the combination to unlock the Finland defence and the reshuffle almost paid off in the 72nd minute. Zoran Tošić picked out fellow substitute Žigić only for the striker to head wide. With Finland defending in numbers Serbia were reduced to trying their luck from distance as time ran out, Milan Jovanović flashing one such effort wide as the visitors held firm.

Madrid duo do the Netherlands proudThe Netherlands ended Bulgaria's unbeaten run in UEFA EURO 2008™ Group G and moved into second place thanks to goals from Real Madrid CF duo Wesley Sneijder and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Vital win
Romania's 3-1 win in Belarus earlier in the day had kept them at the group summit, as one of three undefeated teams alongside tonight's opponents in Amsterdam. So the eventual Dutch victory not only preserved their status but also lifted them into a qualifying position, two points above Bulgaria with a game in hand.
Tactics pay off
Oranje coach Marco van Basten had opted for an adventurous three-pronged attack of Robin van Persie, Ryan Babel and Van Nistelrooy, the third-mentioned making his first competitive appearance since the FIFA World Cup. It was his club-mate Sneijder who broke the deadlock though, replicating his fine form for Madrid since his summer move from AFC Ajax with a 20-metre free-kick into the bottom left-hand corner, to mark a happy return to the Amsterdam ArenA.
Doubling up
Bulgaria, in their first group game since Dimitar Penev's comeback as coach, were having little joy up front – they did not have a real chance until early in the second half when Dimitar Berbatov's shot fizzed wide. The Netherlands duly doubled their lead when Babel's cross found Van Nistelrooy, who celebrated his return to the side by sweeping a shot past goalkeeper Dimitar Ivankov and into the bottom corner.
Wednesday trip
Although Clarence Seedorf, a late substitute for Sneijder, rattled the Bulgaria woodwork in the 77th minute, the 2-0 scoreline was sufficient and the Dutch remain within three points of Romania. It is a gap they can close on Wednesday when they visit Albania with the leaders not in action. Bulgaria will attempt to revive their campaign at home to Luxembourg.

TEAM NEWS
Netherlands
There’s stellar news for van Basten on the injury front, only Rafael van der Vaart, who had to pull out with a calf problem, causes a problem.
The main concern for the coach is who to pick as his starting XI. The match dictates a game focused on pace and skill, so the likes of van Persie, Huntelaar and Babel will almost certainly see action at some point.
The big question mark hangs over whether Ruud van Nistelrooy can secure a starting place in his first competitive match since the 2006 World Cup, and if he does, how he will perform under van Basten.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: van der Sar (Manchester United), Stekelenburg (Ajax), Timmer (Feyenoord).
Defenders: Boulahrouz (Sevilla), Bouma (Aston Villa), Emanuelson (Ajax), Heitinga (Ajax), Jaliens (AZ Alkmaar), Mathijsen (SV Hamburg), Melchiot (Wigan Athletic), Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers).
Mifdielders: Afellay (PSV Eindhoven), van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), de Jong (SV Hamburg), Landzaat (Wigan Athletic), Seedorf (AC Milan), Sneijder (Real Madrid), van der Vaart (SV Hamburg), de Zeeuw (AZ Alkmaar).
Forwards: Babel (Liverpool), Huntelaar (Ajax), Kuyt (Liverpool), van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid), van Persie (Arsenal), Vennegoor of Hesselink (Celtic).
Bulgaria
After a short period on the sidelines through injury, Tottenham striker and all-round Bulgarian hero Dimitar Berbatov makes a return to action. During his few appearances in the Premiership this season he’s looked a forlorn character, so all eyes will be on him to see if he’s up to the task.
Rising star of Bulgarian football, Valeri Bojinov, is not available for selection for more or less 5 months, after being involved in a heavy challenge with Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. The knee ligament damage he sustained means that Bulgaria will have to qualify without him.
In Bojinov’s absence coach Dimitar Peney will call on the services of youngster Ivelin Popov who’s been in good nick with Litex Lovech of late.
Squad:
Goalkeepers: Ivankov (Kayzerispor), Petkov (Levski Sofia).
Defenders: Nikolov (Litex Lovech), Angelov (Energie Cottbus), Tunchev (CSKA Sofia), Kishishev (Leicester), Wagner (Levski Sofia), Tomasic (Levski Sofia), Milanov (Levski Sofia), Zanev (Celta Vigo).
Midfielders: Petrov (Aston Villa), Dimitrov (CSKA Sofia), Yankov (Hannover 96), Telkiyski (Levski Sofia), Peev (Amkar Perm), Popov (Litex Lovech).
Forwards: Petrov (Manchester City), Berbatov (Tottenham), Kushev (Amkar Perm), Yovov (Levski Sofia).

Latvia see off Northern Ireland
Latvia picked up their second win in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group F as Chris Baird's own goal proved a real blow to Northern Ireland's hopes of reaching a first final tournament in 22 years.
Latvia prevail
Although the visitors – second in the group at kick-off – were dominant, they could find no way through and an Imants Bleidelis cross forced Baird into his decisive error early in the second half. While Latvia are a long way from matching their feat of getting to the 2004 finals, Aleksandrs Starkovs' side are at least off the bottom of the group while Northern Ireland will try to win in Iceland on Wednesday.
Healy denied
Nigel Worthington's men made a bright start but Latvia did well to keep them at bay. On 26 minutes, Keith Gillespie forced a save from Andris Vanins and the goalkeeper then denied the leading scorer in qualifying, David Healy. The Fulham FC striker had taken his Group F total to eleven goals in the 3-1 victory over Liechtenstein that launched the reign of new manager Worthington last month. Healy came close again just before the break.
Own goal
Kyle Lafferty threatened from distance early in the second half, yet it was Latvia who broke the deadlock. Moving forward on the counterattack, the home team worked the ball to Bleidelis and his low cross from the right was inadvertently turned into his own net by Baird as he attempted to cut it out at the far post. Now the visitors turned the pressure up a notch but Latvia were defending in numbers and held out thanks to Vanins's superb last-minute reflex save from a Jonny Evans far-post header. Latvia will face another test of resolve in Spain on Wednesday.

Čech salvages point for SlovakiaA thunderous strike from Marek Čech earned Slovakia a crucial point that keeps alive the home side's faint qualifying hopes in Group D while dealing a potentially fatal blow to the Republic of Ireland's chances of reaching next summer's finals.
Late drama
Goals from Stephen Ireland and Kevin Doyle – the second a devastating shot on the turn three minutes before the hour – either side of Maroš Klimpl's equaliser, looked to have given Stephen Staunton's men the three points that would have kept the pressure on the Czech Republic going into the teams' meeting in Prague on Wednesday. Čech had other ideas, though, drilling in from just outside the area a minute into added time to snatch a draw with another home game, against Wales, to come for Slovakia in four days' time.
Ireland opener
There had been a minute's silence before kick-off in memory of former Czechoslovakian international Viliam Schrojf, who died on 1 September at the age of 76, but it was the visitors who began the brighter in Bratislava. They took the lead with a well-worked goal in the seventh minute. Kevin Kilbane broke clear down the left and his deflected cross was brilliantly dummied by Robbie Keane, leaving Ireland, pressing forward from midfield, to lift a simple finish over Štefan Senecký.
Doyle delight
The Irish failed to build on that early advantage, however, with goalkeeper Shay Given having to make a fine block from Marek Sapara before sustained Slovakia pressure was rewarded with an equaliser eight minutes before half-time. Sapara was the architect, Ján Ďurica flicking on his left-wing corner for the determined Klimpl to head in at the far post. Marek Mintál threatened early in the second period, although when a third goal did arrive it came at the other end: Doyle worked space 25 metres out and unleashed an unstoppable left-foot shot into the top corner. Just as Irish celebrations were starting in earnest, though, Čech popped up to salvage Slovakia's evening.

Qualifying round - 08 September 2007 , Croatia Vs Estonia
Eduardo keeps Croatia on course
Eduardo da Silva struck twice inside six first-half minutes to seal an easy win for Croatia and move them two points clear at the Group E summit.
Missed penalty
Croatia overcame an early setback when Darijo Srna missed a sixth-minute penalty and dominated a one-sided fixture to remain on course for the 2008 UEFA European Championship, with a trip to Andorra to come on Wednesday. Israel's defeat in England means Croatia are now clear at the top of the group with fellow unbeaten team Russia in second. Estonia, who have claimed just three points from nine qualifying matches, offered little attacking threat but showed resistance in keeping the scoreline to a minimum.
Powerful finish
The pattern of the evening appeared clear-cut from the opening moments, and when Croatia were awarded a spot-kick it was already looking bleak for the visitors. Defender Teet Allas handled inside the box to offer Srna the perfect chance to open the scoring, but the midfielder smashed his conversion against the left upright. Croatia, however, stayed on top and continued to plug away at the Estonia back line, finally breaching it in the 39th minute when Eduardo fired in a powerful low shot.
Damage limitation
The Arsenal FC forward doubled the advantage in added time at the end of the first half, collecting a right-wing pass from Luka Modrić and making no mistake with a rasping left-footed drive straight into the top right corner to put the tie beyond doubt. From there on it became a damage-limitation exercise for Estonia, who succeeded by not conceding again and go to F.Y.R. Macedonia on Wednesday.

Late goals keep Scotland soaringStephen McManus and James McFadden struck in the last 15 minutes to give Scotland a priceless UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group B win against Lithuania.
In contention
Kris Boyd had put Scotland ahead in the first half but Tomas Danilevičius equalised from the penalty spot. However, McManus and McFadden delighted the home fans with late goals to keep Scotland in a strong position ahead of Wednesday's trip to France.
Reaction saves
The first chance had gone to Lithuania's Mindaugas Kalonas on 18 minutes but his shot went wide and Scotland soon took control. It seemed that the hosts would score in the 23rd minute but Žydrunas Karčemarskas produced superb reaction saves from consecutive headers by Boyd and Lee McCulloch.
Scotland ahead
Boyd made amends just past the half-hour. Darren Fletcher delivered a quickly taken free-kick from the right and the Rangers FC striker escaped his marker and dived to head the ball inside the far post. Karčemarskas made two further stops from Boyd late in the half.
Penalty equaliser
It was a fairly quiet start to the second period but soon after the hour, the scores were level. Tomas Zvirgzdauskas broke into the Scotland box and went down after a challenge from Fletcher; Danilevičius struck the penalty straight into the middle of goal as Craig Gordon guessed left.
Winner
Scotland were determined to restore their lead and Karčemarskas was called into action to deny Stephen McManus's header from Fletcher's free-kick. But with 13 minutes left Shaun Maloney, who had just come on, crossed to the far post after Fletcher's short corner to the edge of the area. McManus's knee connected with the ball, enough to send it emphatically past Karčemarskas. Substitute McFadden secured the victory soon after with a flying long-range finish after being teed up by Boyd.

Toni Vows To Be Fit For France
Luca Toni has promised the Azzurri that he will do everything he can to be fit in time for Italy's Euro 2008 qualifier against France.
Luca Toni injured himself when he scored the opening goal in Bayern Munich's 3-0 win over Hannover 96 yesterday, and had to be replaced soon.
A hamstring problem could rule him out for anywhere between one and three weeks, but the big striker has vowed to be ready in time for the Euro qualifier against France on Spentember 8.
"I felt a hardening of the quadricep while I was striking the ball that gave us the 1-0 lead," he said.
"It’s the first time this has happened to me. I think it is just a twinge, but today it will be evaluated more thoroughly with clinical tests. I remain optimistic.
"I absolutely have to be there for France and I intend to be there.
"I will immediately begin treatment with my physiotherapist, Giovanni Bianchi."
Raymond Domenech will be consigned to the stands on September 8th when his French team takes on Italy, after UEFA judged him guilty of bringing the game into disrepute...
France manager Raymond Domenech will sit out his side's vital Euro 2008 qualifying clash with Italy after UEFA slapped him with a one game touchline ban.
The coach was fined 6,000 euros and told to stay clear of the technical area following charges of "bringing the game into disrepute" following comments made against Italian football.
Domenech, whose side beat the world champions of the Azzurri 3-1 in their initial Euro 2008 qualifier in Paris, angered many in Italy - and in the corridors of power at UEFA - after this highly unusual outburst.
A UEFA statement described the former Lyon player's remarks as "inappropriate."
Among the offending comments, as reproduced from La Parisien, were the following:
"The main problem could be the referees, but that’s often the problem with Italy."
"In the past there have been rigged games like the France v Italy Under-21 qualifier for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney."
"They had bought the ref and the cheating was incredible. If it happens once you have doubts. There are hidden agreements in Italian football."
It is not yet known whether or not Domenech is to launch an appeal. He has been given three days in which to do so.
Les Bleus sit two points clear of the Azzurri at the top of Group B.

Israel bring back absentees
Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC's veteran defender Ygal Antebi and Maccabi Netanya FC full-back Klemi Saban made their return to the Israel squad after lengthy absences on Saturday.
Returning numbers
In addition to Saban and Antebi, who was an unused substitute in the goalless draw at home against England in March, Israel coach Dror Kashtan also welcomed back Beitar Jerusalem FC midfielder Michael Zandberg, Maccabi Haifa FC forward Yaniv Katan, Pini Balali of Turkish outfit Sivasspor and Elyaniv Barda of Belgian side KRC Genk. All of the above were missing from the squad which suffered the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Belarus in Minsk last month, when he named his squad on Saturday.
Wembley date
The 23-man party, which takes on England in their UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifier at Wembley stadium on 8 September will assemble on Sunday, take their first training session on Monday and travel to London the following day, where they will meet up with Liverpool FC's Yossi Benayoun, Tal Ben Haim of Chelsea FC and RC Deportivo La Coruña goalkeeper Dudu Aouate. Israel are level on points with Group E leaders Croatia and three points ahead of Steve McLaren's side, although they have played a match more than both group rivals.

Heskey gets shock England recall
England manager Steve McClaren has drafted striker Emile Heskey into his squad for the UEFA EURO 2008™ home qualifiers against Israel and Russia while defender Sol Campbell has been removed due to a hamstring injury.
Three-year absence
The 29-year-old Heskey has earned a shock recall after a fine start to the season with Wigan Athletic FC in the Premier League. Capped 43 times before, scoring five times, the former Liverpool FC player has not played for his country since the UEFA EURO 2004™ finals. "I think he deserves to be recalled. We need his experience at this time," said McClaren. "Emile is a player with a lot international experience and has played many times with Michael Owen in the past. He's been in good form for Wigan this season."
Injury jinx
England's attacking options have been hit by injuries to Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Kieron Dyer and Frank Lampard while Peter Crouch is suspended for the game against Israel on 8 September. Steven Gerrard is still a doubt with a hairline fracture of a toe and the injury to 32-year-old Campbell has now seen the curse spread to the defence. England currently sit fourth in Group E three points behind Croatia and Israel - although they have a game in hand on the latter - and one behind a Russia side who they meet on 12 September.

Panucci back in Italy reckoning
AS Roma defender Christian Panucci has been recalled to the Italy squad for the UEFA EURO 2008™ Group B qualifiers against France and Ukraine while coach Roberto Donadoni has given Pasquale Foggia his first call-up.
Unfamiliar role
Panucci, who last appeared for the Azzurri in the 2004 finals, has been brought into Donadoni's 25-man selection because of a thigh injury to Marco Materazzi after impressing in an unfamiliar centre-back role this season. The 34-year-old's experience may now get him the nod to start against France on 8 September over Andrea Barzagli and recalled ACF Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini.
Dream day
Meanwhile, Foggia receives an opportunity after scoring twice for Cagliari Calcio on Sunday in their 3-2 Serie A defeat against Juventus. Giorgio Chiellini, who scored the winning goal in that game for the Turin giants, is also back in the squad after a year-long absence while Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta are in contention after being left out of the Italian side that was defeated by Hungary in last month's friendly. Italy can leapfrog France into top spot in Group B if they win in Milan, currently trailing their opponents by two points. They then meet Ukraine in Kiev four days later.
Italy squad
Goalkeepers: Christian Abbiati (Club Atlético de Madrid), Marco Amelia (AS Livorno Calcio), Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
